The investigative team, made up of 25 South Korean experts along with foreign experts from the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom and Sweden, concluded that the ship sank as a result of its being hit by a torpedo which had markings ''consistent with the marking of a previously obtained North Korean torpedo''.

While such an act could clearly be labelled an act of war, South Korea has fortunately avoided doing anything rash and has looked to the international community for help in responding to this latest belligerence from the North.

While most of the world realises that this latest aggression from the regional bully, which left 46 sailors dead, cannot go unpunished, finding the right response is proving very difficult because the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, is seen as such a loose cannon, and one armed with nuclear weapons.

One thing is clear. Any diplomatic response is meaningless without the support of China, and to a lesser extent Russia. Both nations have said they are waiting to see the evidence reviewed by the international investigative committee before they make a decision on how to proceed.

That's fair enough, but it seems quite unlikely that the findings of the committee will be disputed in the end. It's a safe bet that all of the nations represented on the committee, and particularly South Korea and the US, would have much preferred to find that the sinking had been an accident.

South Korea is pushing for the United Nations Security Council to censure the North, and on Friday Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, in a meeting with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, indicated that China would likely vote for censure, or at least abstain in a vote.

Mr Wen promised on Friday that Beijing will not protect ''anyone'' once it had concluded who was responsible for the sinking of the ship.

That's encouraging, but in fact China should take a much more pro-active stance than merely going along with a censure motion.

However, the reasons for China's reluctance to get tough with North Korea are complicated. There is the fact that North Korea is a fellow communist state and long-time ally, and also that it provides China a buffer with South Korea.

But there is little doubt that the Chinese are also getting fed up with the aggressive antics of Mr Kim, which destabilise the whole region and could theoretically force China into a confrontation with the US, which is sworn to defend the South.

In the six-party negotiations which included China, in 2005 North Korea agreed to dismantle its nuclear programme in exchange for foreign aid. But for reasons that are still not clear Mr Kim tore up the agreement and tested a nuclear weapon in October 2006. One week later China agreed for the first time to support the UN against North Korea. The relationship between the two countries has been somewhat strained ever since.

On the surface it would seem that China should have the power to easily rein in North Korea. About 90% of the country's energy imports, 80% of its consumer goods and 45% of its food items come from China.

But despite the obvious dependency of the North on China's continued support, Beijing's reluctance to get tough with Pyongyang may in large part mirror a similar reluctance felt by the rest of the world. The unpredictability and apparent disregard for the wellbeing of his own people and that of the people of other nations make Mr Kim a very dangerous man.

It has been suggested that this has been overstated and that in fact Mr Kim l is using incidents such as the nuclear test and the sinking of the Cheonan to set up the succession of his youngest son, Kim Jong-Un, to be the next leader of North Korea, possibly as early as 2012. Under this scenario the younger Kim would take responsibility for these acts of aggression to somehow ''legitimise'' his leadership. If true, this would sadly seem to lock the son into the same pattern of belligerence as the father. Nevertheless, a succession of power in the North is probably the best hope for a real thaw in tensions on the Korean peninsula. Meanwhile, China should use all the influence it has to keep Pyongyang in check.

takecareDD@gmail.com

takecareDD@gmail.com

ที่มาข้อมูล : have felt a sprinkle of rain or two - a sure sign that the rainy season is near. 'Muse' asked how you prepare yourself for the monsoon season and its extreme downpours and heavy winds? Do you feel the need to carry any extra belongings to ensure that you stay dry, cold-free and happy, or do you regularly inspect your vehicle to ensure safety on the roads? Here are your answers!

"First, I carefully examine the big trees in my garden to check whether they are likely to collapse in a storm. If that is the case, I have somebody trim them so as to avoid a potential accident in the case of a heavy storm.

Also, during the rainy season, I always carry a tiny umbrella with me because the weather these days is quite unpredictable and you never know when it is going to rain. An umbrella can protect me from both catching a cold and getting a skin disease from contaminated rainfall.

Finally, car and motorcycle drivers should spend some time reading books or manuals suggesting how to drive safely in the rain for their own safety as well as others on the road."Som-Ohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03710315548520767773noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3515861418782168624.post-63677742760101132842010-05-21T07:43:00.003-07:002010-05-21T07:55:35.549-07:00Champion in the makingPublished: 18/05/2010 at 12:00 AM
Newspaper section: Outlook
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 278px; height: 250px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBU-2HM7TudR41DKdq1QwSsNWYridGklSovwJAA_8GOvnADRfiqHf5hg0yM1pgkIKDsUXxthfePor_18vtY2AWcoLoM7SBZ2_Y4VSUXlYDChGwE_WJN8Ir216cvoRh6oDsXS359LU9CPc/s400/143656.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473736934115843474" />

Emerging tennis star Tanaporn Thongsing shines at Thai tournament

Congratulations to Tanaporn Thongsing on winning the women's title of the Thailand Tennis Championship 2010 recently held at Siam Bayshore Resort and Spa, Pattaya. One of the people behind her success - apart from her own determination, her parents and her coach - was her psychology coach, Dr Surachart Nunbhakdi.

Tanaporn Thongsing (2nd right) celebrates winning the 2010 women’s title of the Thailand Tennis Championship with her psychology coach, Dr Surachart Nunbhakdi (left), Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi and Krissada Sukosol Clapp.
Fifteen-year-old Tanaporn has been playing tennis since she was small, but started to get serious at the age of about 9. After having listened to one of Dr Surachart's lectures, Tanaporn's parents came to see him, saying how she had been improving to a point, then for some reason she had reached a plateau, and often got frustrated and irritated when she couldn't play well.

Upon talking to Tanaporn herself, her parents as well as her coach to assess their attitude and willingness to change, he agreed to take her under his wing.

"Competitive tennis is 95 percent a mental game rather than just a sport," explained Dr Surachart, a dentist by profession, but a competitive tennis player in his spare time. "However, this aspect is never picked up by coaches in Thailand, not even with the national teams. Thai athletes have so much potential, but they always seem to burn out before they get to the top. Psychological coaching can help them achieve their potential."

Dr Surachart came to this conclusion through his own experience. Having done both coaching others and played tournaments himself, he realised he was suffering so much during competition. Competing at international level in the senior league - he once reached 105 in the world rankings - he got so depressed before a tournament.

"I couldn't eat, I couldn't sleep," he remarked. "So I began to read up on the subject. I joined a training programme run by the International Tennis Federation, and found that it was quite a normal phenomenon, but no one ever talked about it. The higher you climb, the more you suffer from nerves, fear, anxiety, depression."

He began to give lectures on the subject, and although a lot of people listened, only Tanaporn's parents came back to him for advice. Since Tanaporn was still very young at the time - only 12 years old - Dr Surachart had to coach her mother who, in turn, taught her how to adjust her attitude and build up her spirit. The aim, said Dr Surachart, is not to compete for the prize, but to compete for the thrill and enjoyment of the battle. This way, winning is not the "be all and end all" of a match.

Tanaporn had to be trained on how to walk, how to breathe, how to control her feelings. Hecklers were even used to throw her off-balance, so she could learn to control her emotions and practice concentration. The letters "A", "B" and "C" were written on her racquet to remind her during every break to be Alert, Breathe and Concentrate.

Her coach had to cooperate by not pushing her to the limit. And even her parents were given guidelines on how to be behave during and after a tournament. They were not to overreact if she won the match, they weren't even supposed to clap or shower her with praise or celebrate.

"Our aim is not getting the trophy," insisted Dr Surachart, "but enjoying the competition for what it is. It's just another match."

Tough, but that's the way it is. And it seems to be working, as Tanaporn managed to beat a lot of other players much older and more experienced than her. And now she has left school to turn pro, this is going to make all the difference.

"Physically, Tanaporn is tall and strong. She hits the balls hard, but now she has to learn the why's and wherefore's of each shot as tools to vanquish her rival," noted Dr Surachart.

Not only is he coaching her in her mental capacity, he is also helping adjust her racquet to customise it for tournament, something that has so far been ignored in Thailand.

"I weigh the racket, measure the balancing point, calculate the swing weight, and add a lead balance to enhance the impact."

"Tanaporn is definitely going to be a new phenomenon in Thai sporting history," he noted as Tanaporn embarked on her new career with a match in India.Som-Ohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03710315548520767773noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3515861418782168624.post-30361006038496485032010-05-21T06:46:00.001-07:002010-05-21T07:43:27.786-07:00MUSICAL THEATRE<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 176px; height: 250px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz_JM-F7_x7_8w0ZpuhHWqGWmcstcCrJwXQscG91w78HKZN7m9cmNzfBehBDFsfg6II2Ab9conRj5QhjxTP3GxNPa59kTyn8oHMSNW-_cOXx1tzeVerec3_aEpa05MK-V6_CISYjO_8gQ/s400/142717.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473733783897211346" />
Sudsakorn, fused between folk and contemporary theatre, will be performed at Vic Hua Hin at 7:30pm every Saturday, until June 12.

Under Jitti Chompee's choreography and direction, the Thai musical theatre refreshes folk theatre likay into a contemporary visual, music and dance spectacle based on the famous Thai story. The wound is hard to heal. The morning after seems surreal. Never before has Bangkok been in such shock. Newspaper headlines with large blown up pictures stirred emotions of sadness and anger. How did we bring ourselves to this point? When is it going to end? Throughout the events of the last few days I watched the news in despair, with events taking a turn for the worse every time some breaking news break was being reported from the various places in Bangkok, from the tensions of the confrontation, the rhetoric from both the government and the red shirts, to the shootings, looting and burning of buildings.

I made phone calls to friends in the area, worried about their safety, then checked news with sources who were as confused as I was. All the while I received calls from various people who felt I may have an explanation or who wanted me to analyse the ongoing situation – each of us desperately trying to make sense of what happened and what went wrong.

The night was even worse. The curfew declared was, of course, necessary to enable crowd control, to cool hot heads and to prevent opportunistic looters.

But it also made rumours fly and journalists blind. The cyber world was infested with rumours. One that stood out was the shootings at Patumwanaram Temple, a declared safety zone lodged between Paragon and Central World, the two largest shopping malls at the centre of the red shirts’ rally site.

Six bodies were found in the morning but rumours claimed more existed, while police believed there were bombs rigged around the area. And who were the shooters? They could have been from the army, the unidentified militia, or red shirt guards, depending on who you talk to. The “truth” is according to the perspective of who is telling and where their sympathies lie.

I sincerely do not know whom to believe, without a neutral party to prove the worthiness of information conveyed. There are more stories coming out and careful judgement is needed.

Events in the next few days remain unstable not only in Bangkok but also in the outer provinces, especially in the Isan Northeast and the North, the red shirts’ stronghold. Government buildings have been burnt down and protest rallies are widespread. Some have told me, sadly, that the worse is yet to come.

All the while, the blame game will definitely intensify. I did not have to look far beyond my Facebook and Twitter where I have friends from across the political spectrum, yellow, red, neutral, Prime Minister Abhisit-lovers and haters; apart from my school buddies and business colleagues, who also hold their own political views. Only my friends abroad who are concerned for my safety seem politically neutral.

A lot of people thought that since I share the PM’s last name, I could convey him a message: to resign or to give him encouragement; to blame him for using force, or to support him in crushing the red shirts; to chastise the army for the sniper killings or to condemn the burnings by the rioters. Some knew that I used to be with Thai Rak Thai Party and served in the cabinet of ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra; similar messages were sent in from both sides.

Many have started to blame one another on the political views expressed.

In many instances the language turned ugly.

Luckily, there have also been opinions expressed with reason and not emotion, from both sides. That at least gives me hope among the on-going insanity.

How did we get to this point? If I start answering the question, again either side will have their rationale and blame the other.

Events told will be countered by other events that prove otherwise. Was it because of PM Abhisit’s stubbornness that made the government decide to use force and not go along with the senators’ last negotiation offer, eventually leading to the carnage? Or was it because of ex-premier Thaksin’s stubbornness: since he did not get what he wanted, he ordered the red shirts not to disperse, giving the government no choice but to begin their containment operation which led to the red shirts burning down buildings? The opinions are already formed and are hardening with each turn of events and they cut deeper into a wound that is unlikely to heal in the near future.

But although it is hard to imagine so amidst the anger and pain, the healing process must begin immediately. National reconciliation must start even as there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. Action must be taken before the political division reaches the point of no return. And this requires both sides to come back to the negotiating table.

PM Abhisit’s 5-point reconciliation plan must continue to be the centrepiece in putting the country back together. The government must be sincere and work hard in reaching out to the various groups and institutions, especially those anti-government ones, to join. The rhetoric, whatever the intelligence says about “terrorists”, must be toned down. Attempts to monopolise television news, blacking out news reporting independence, like on Wednesday night, must be avoided. Press freedom will help, not hurt, the government; but the opposite will not.

In addition, the government either on its own or even better, through Parliament or the Human Rights Commission, must set up an independent committee as a fact finding body to clear up the doubts and rumours of what has occurred.

The process must not be interfered with and the results must not be used in the political blame game. But the wrongdoers must be punished in accordance with the law.

On the red shirts’ side, a call for law and order must be respected. As all the red shirts leaders are in jail, ex-premier Thaksin must help bring back sense to his sympathisers. The opposition Puea Thai Party MPs must use their network to halt, not to encourage, violent protest rallies. They must become the medium in trying to return to the use of parliamentary channels in resolving the crisis.

With the tremendous loss of life, property and the prevalent anxious state of mind of all Thais, the two conflicting parties must bury the hatchet and start to pick up the pieces in a process to heal the nation.Som-Ohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03710315548520767773noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3515861418782168624.post-68545700519331312602010-05-21T06:34:00.000-07:002010-05-21T06:35:55.142-07:00A horrific day for Bangkok<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 207px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCozA5TRpqrcGpRVJpJlS6h6DeWhJe94S3oO8GL5UA9fqUXUCV9kmwz14wjpEnaexdZuZNEbhF1T-1va59B4efY36RS-WR-OYgu7-oW_le7wTpxFtI9HQyOTHFue9r2LqSH14iuWcQ5Rs/s400/144386.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473716432586113010" />

The plumes of thick black smoke from the burning of more than 30 buildings throughout Wednesday had, by last evening, mostly disappeared from Bangkok’s skyline, leaving behind charred skeletons and a deep scar which may take years to heal, if it will ever be healed at all.

The unprecedented destruction of property – which included a high-end shopping mall and a five-star hotel – has completely shattered the myth of Thai people as peace-loving, as pronounced in the Thai national anthem. The Land of Smiles as our country has been known worldwide no longer holds true, thanks to the red-shirted rioters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, their leaders, financiers and supporters. On the surface of it, the burning spree appears to be a random act of violence by enraged red shirt protesters who may have felt betrayed by their leaders for selling them short to the government, by turning themselves in to the police to face the charges against them and declaring an end to the months-long protest.

But a closer look at the torched buildings tells a different story. The rage may have been spontaneous, but the choice of the targets of these arson attacks was very probably not. It appears that many of the targeted buildings, such as the Central World shopping mall, the Centara Grand hotel, the Loxley building, Channel 3 the various Bangkok Bank branches and the stock market may have been pre-selected and the arson planned in advance. The Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situations (CRES) yesterday broadcast a video clip showing Natthawut Saikua, a UDD core leader, telling the red shirts at Ratchaprasong protest site to “burn them all if they [the military] seize the power, I will take full responsibility”. Whether Mr Nattawut really meant what he said when he make that fiery and provocative exhortation does not matter anymore, as the buildings have been torched.

The UDD leaders cannot deny responsibility for the burning and looting spree even though the incidents took place after their surrender. They remain guilty and deserve to be condemned in the strongest terms as do the rioters and looters for one underlying fact – that is it was the leaders themselves who poisoned the minds of the protesters with their rhetoric of hate against the government and the state, to the extent that the protesters no longer had any respect for the rule of law.

Despite all the criticism against the government and the army for the deaths and injuries as a result of the military operation to disperse the protesters, as well as criticism from those who might have felt that not enough had been done earlier to deal with the protesters, the government and the army appeared to have had no choice when faced with such deadly threats from armed elements among the protesters. It was even feared that some of the deaths were caused by unidentified gunmen. Still, there is a read need for the government to help those affected by yesterday’s senseless burning of Bangkok as well as those affected by the prolonged protest. No less urgent and important is the need for national reconciliation to address the pressing problems of the grassroots people in order to win back the trust and confidence of the supporters of the UDD. More importantly, an intensive investigation must be carried out to find out those responsible for yesterday’s mayhem, especially the people who masterminded and plotted the arson attacks and bring them to fade the full force of justice.Som-Ohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03710315548520767773noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3515861418782168624.post-91831502592612011882010-05-21T06:31:00.000-07:002010-05-21T06:33:49.894-07:00All flights as usual at SuvarnabhumiAll airlines using Suvarnabhumi airport have resumed flights and normal timetables, airport director Niran Theeranartsin said on Friday.

Some airlines had cancelled flights over the past few days due to the continuing political turmoil.

“There will be no problems for passengers who have to travel at night, despite the curfew.
